Three Masterpieces Emerge from T-shirt Art Contest
The results are in from "The Beloved T-Shirt," a national, juried art show held in June at CORE New Art Space, Denver, CO. According to the curator of the show, Charlie Taublieb of Taublieb Consulting, Engelwood, CO, most of the entries submitted by participants from seven states were screen-printed T-shirts, but none of those garments won. Instead, prizes were awarded for a painted T-shirt, a stained-glass piece, and a mixed-media work.
As indicated in the call for entries that was published in Screen Printing's May 2003 issue (page 8), there were no restrictions on the media that could be used for the art, provided that the works were produced on T-shirts or concerned T-shirts as the subject matter. Of the winning designs, only the Best-of-Show recipient featured a design that appeared on a T-shirt. The hand-painted work, called "Fetish," was created by Amy Kollar Anderson, Dayton, OH, with acrylic paints. As part of her award, Anderson will have the opportunity to hold an individual showing at the gallery at a future date.
Honorable Mention awards went to Linda Cranston, Longmont, CO, and David Menard, Denver, CO. Cranston's "Four Glass T-Shirts" depicted the theme garment in stained glass, while Menard's work, "Hanging Out to Dry," was an abstract rendition of the T-shirt created in encaustic art wax, oils, jigsaw-puzzle pieces, and copper.
The Beloved T-Shirt show was juried by James Popp, Popp Art, Denver, CO, and Erik Wogen, National Business Media, Inc., Broomfield, CO.
