ARTIST STATEMENT

Art and science share few attributes, but what these two diverse subjects do share is a deep interest in uncovering and exploring the mysterious nature of the universe, its workings, and the relationship that humans have to it. My current series of work explores this connection through abstract painting and drawing. In my work, scientific imagery reflects the mystery of its original source—nature, technology, and the inner workings of light and atomic particles—making these enigmatic objects and systems accessible to the viewer through emotional resonance.

In order to create this type of response, I utilize color and other formal elements that reflect emotional experiences for me—whether they are weighty, dark blue washes or childlike scribbles—to cause the viewer to react to the mystery of the image.

I give the imagery a new meaning, often quite personal and individual, outside of the boundaries of scientific definition. In other words, the viewer can see a diagram, an equation, or images of electron trails, but in the context of a specific palette of color or gestural mark, their interpretation changes. The form of the piece might come to suggest anger, fear, bliss, or wonder.

At the root of these works—their essence—is an exploration of the mystery of the universe, the human body, the elements of nature, and the Self. Through science, definitions of objects, systems and experiences are created, but art allows for the wonder of these facets of life and existence to be absorbed and explored in an intuitive, non-linear fashion.
