ARTIST STATEMENT

For years, my little red pickup had a bumper sticker warning: "I brake for garage sales." It was no surprise that I would be drawn to collage and mixed media when I began my third career, as an artist. I use the stuff of yard sales to make my art ... scrabble squares, quilt scraps, dominos, old hand tools. Just as I look for ways to recycle used articles into my art and give them new life, I find ways to renew myself through the creative process and often portray a renewal theme in my art works.

Formerly a journalist and then psychotherapist, I have reclaimed myself again as an artist and use self-identity as another frequent theme. I enjoy combining the physical with the cerebral -- making manifest the mental thought to the tangible object of art -- a metaphysical metaphor for the whole of our lives. Inherent in collage and mixed media are rich textures and multi-layers of medium and meaning. And, by using the mundane, everyday objects of our lives, I believe it helps to bring viewers closer, almost as collaborators.
