BIO - After a career in advertising that spanned two decades,
Mark Penner-Howell has recently returned to painting and drawing
as his primary creative outlet. He currently lives and works in
Denver, Colorado.
ARTIST STATEMENT - I make paintings from familiar found images - everything from Dick
& Jane illustrations to scientific diagrams, to photos I find on
Soldier's blogs. Then I push them around in sketches and in
Photoshop until I begin to tease out contrasting meaning among the
images. I don't pretend to understand everything that results when
I set out to make a painting. Not knowing exactly where a work is
going helps keep me interested. For me, the creation of a painting
is fundamentally an attempt to build new narratives from familiar
images. Usually I end up nudging the pieces toward certain themes
that I find fascinating. Broadly, these themes have to do with
human frailty, and are often delivered with a heavy dose of irony
and dark humor
